Our chat with Chris Jarrett, the master mixologist from Kona Bar in Falmouth.
In the heart of Falmouth’s Discovery Quay, Chris Jarrett has created something special at Kona – a tropical-inspired cocktail bar where serious mixology meets relaxed vibes, and every drink tells a story of Cornwall’s exceptional produce. Our chat took place just before he took over and opened the doors, so it was top secret at the time, but the secret is definitely out now!
Chris completely in love with the art of mixing drinks, layering flavours, and finding that perfect balance between sweet, sour, and bitter. He’s an ambassador for Cornish drinks producers and shares his passion and knowledge with us in this chat.
Now a Spirits Educator with distinction, Chris has become one of Cornwall’s most respected mixologists. As a Knightor Vermouth Ambassador and owner of Kona bar, he’s channelling years of expertise into creating a bar experience that goes beyond just serving drinks.
The Kona Philosophy
Kona blends Asian and Pacific fusion flavours with hand-crafted cocktails that showcase Cornwall’s burgeoning spirits scene.
Cornwall’s Spirit Revolution
In our chat, Chris shares his insider knowledge of Cornwall’s incredible drinks scene, from established producers to exciting newcomers making waves in the industry. His recommendations span the county, including:
Colwith Farm – exceptional small-batch spirits and world-class award winning Vodka
Knightor – where world-class vermouth meets Cornwall winemaking heritage
Rose Mullion Distillery – craft distilling at its finest
Tandowr – bold sea salt Vodka flavours
Loveday – innovative spirits in Falmouth, that make our current favourite Rum and the most delectable Gins.
For food and atmosphere, Chris points to Tom Thumb for its delectable cocktails, The Longstore for drinks too, and The Duke pop up for that perfect Cornish pub experience.
The Art of the Cocktail
Ask Chris about his favourite drink. He made us one and it was the best we’d ever tested. A properly made Negroni: bittersweet, complex, ice-cold, and gin-forward. His go-to showcases his Cornish connections: equal parts local gin, Sipello Bittersweet Aperitif, and Knightor Rosso Vermouth.
Through his cocktail masterclasses and work at Kona, Chris is on a mission to elevate how people think about Cornish food and drink, so remember to pop in, say hello and try his mouthwatering creations when you’re in Falmouth and feeling like a treat.
