Flushing faces Falmouth across the harbour, which gives you all the maritime atmosphere without the crowds

This tiny village of colour-washed cottages and narrow lanes has been watching ships come and go for centuries – it was settled by Dutch engineers in the 1660s, hence the name borrowed from their home town Vlissingen, in English.

The quay is the heart of everything. At high tide, boats bob at moorings and the water comes right up to the walls. At low tide, you get mudflats and wading birds. The pub sits right on the water – proper local atmosphere, decent food, and the kind of conversations you overhear about tides and moorings.

What makes Flushing special is its position. You’re close enough to Falmouth to nip across on the Flushing Ferry (five minutes, runs year-round), but far enough away that you get peace when you want it.

Secret tips: The waterside sauna is the special wellness treat we all deserve. Walk the coastal path south toward Mylor – it’s one of Cornwall’s most beautiful harbour-side walks, winding through woodland with glimpses of water through the trees. Trefusis Point gives you views across the harbour entrance to Pendennis and St Mawes castles. The village shop doubles as a post office and does surprisingly good coffee.

Where to eat: The Royal Standard on the hill for village pub vibes. Harbour House for water-side finer dining. Otherwise, jump on the ferry to Falmouth – you’re five minutes from dozens of options.

Getting there: Flushing sits off the A39 between Falmouth and Penryn. Parking is limited in the village – use the small car park or street parking where you can find it. The ferry from Falmouth brings you to Flushing Quay.

Nearby discoveries: Mylor along the coast path, Falmouth five minutes by ferry, Penryn up the hill. Perfect base for exploring the harbour while avoiding Falmouth’s bustle.
